    STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES: Guidance Services
    Overview: Providing support for all students and their families is the primary rule of guidance services. Typical function in this area include counseling, record keeping, co-ordination of social service agencies, and participation in the school's general student-support service program.

    • What policies do we have in this area?
    • What are the primary objectives of the guidance program?
    • Are the goals and objectives for guidance being met?
    • What do we do to inform parents about guidance services?
    • What are the state standards for guidance (K-12)?
    • What is the guidance focus and goals of the program?
    • How are roles defined (e.g., counseling and college placement)?
    • What services can be contracted or provided through collaboration?
    • How does guidance interface with other student support programs?
    • How can I promote effectiveness in the guidance program?
    • What is the current model for delivering the guidance program?
    • Does it meet School Quality Standards and NEASC accreditation standards?
    • How does the model support the school’s mission, and what are the program goals?
    • How is achievement of the goals measured?
    • What are the links with other programs within the school? With the instructional program? Across the district/SU?
    • What are the links with program and agencies outside the school?
    Tasks to Consider
    • Review policy.
    • Receive a report on the current guidance program's effectiveness.
    • Discuss as a board, with senior administrators, the priority objectives for the program.
    • Communicate with parents and students about guidance services.
    • Review state standards.
    • Review job descriptions.
    • Review ongoing organizational chart.
    • Evaluate action plans on meetings common needs for staff development and/or program changes.
    • Review the job descriptions for personnel in the guidance program, including counselors, director of guidance, registrar, etc.
    • Review the program goals and any feedback data.
    • Determine if there is a district-wide guidance program, and if the school is meeting its desired outcomes.
    • Review course of study, school profile, and other documents produced by the guidance department.
    • Review supervision and evaluation processes for counselors.
    • Determine roles and responsibilities for scheduling, data collection, testing, and other guidance duties.
    • Conduct parent/student survey (e.g., satisfaction with services).
