    Overview: These services are a critical part of the support for all students. Good program design with adequate resources assures compliance with legal requirements and provides a resource for special and compensatory education programs. Good programs move well beyond band aids and immunization record checks.

    • What policies do we have in this area?
    • What is the overall health of our staff and student population?
    • Do we have a comprehensive health curriculum in place?
    • What do we do to inform parents on school health issues?
    • What are the health needs of our school and community?
    • What is required by state, feds, and community?
    • What programs/services exist?
    • What programs/services are needed?
    • How is wellness of staff and faculty valued/supported?
    • What curriculum and curriculum options are utilized?
    • How are wellness and health integrated into curriculum?
    • What is the current model for the delivery of health services? Does it meet School Quality Standards? Does it meet the needs of the school and community?
    • What is our belief about health services and how does that align with the school’s mission, goals and programs?
    • What are the trends in the district/SU, school?
    Tasks to Consider
    • Review policies.
    • Have the superintendent; principal(s), and/or health instruction staff present an overview of the health curriculum.
    • Be prepared for parental issues by anticipating the key questions typically asked about this subject.
    • Review Federal and State requirements (programs/staffing and curriculum).
    • Review board policies.
    • Review curriculum.
    • Review compliance matters (e.g. blood borne pathogens/AIDS education and procedures).
    • Ensure training of all staff.
    • Review the current delivery model for health services and the curriculum.
    • Review policies, procedures and other requirements.
    • Review compliance issues and expectations for district/SU and local training expectations.
    • Work with the central office to develop a method for assessing services.
    • Identify unmet needs and a system for addressing them.
