    Overview: Assessment of Student Learning requires an intentional set of practices that align with state and federal requirements. Instructional practices are driven by student assessment results. Public support of the system can also be maintained with thoughtful assessment practices.

    Guiding Questions
    • What measures do we use to assess student learning?
    • Are our students meeting local, state and federal requirements?
    • How does the district ensure accurate and timely feedback to all stakeholders regarding student learning and how do we respond to this information?
    • What policies do we have in this area (student retention, promotion, grade advancement)?
    • How can resources be directed/ redirected to more effectively increase student learning?
    • What is the superintendent’s role in assessment of student learning?
    • What tools and procedures are in place to guide assessment?
    • What goals does the school have pertaining to student learning outcomes?
    • How and by whom are the data collected, manipulated and reported?
    • How are student outcomes related to curriculum changes?
    • What methods of assessment are used by teachers and are these connected to curricula using multiple assessment measures?
    • How are standards in meeting the Vermont Standards assessed?
    • What are the academic targets in the current action plans?
    • What is the comprehensive local assessment plan?
    • How is the student assessment information communicated to all stakeholders?
    Tasks to Consider
    • Request annual reports from superintendent on Assessment System(s) (federal, state, local) and district response to results.
    • Review budget allocation with administration.
    • Review policy.
    • Report to the community student assessment results as required under Act 68.
    • Review policies and procedures to determine superintendent’s role.
    • Review standardized and authentic assessment tools used to assess student outcomes.
    • Establish clear guidelines for data collation, manipulation, and reporting.
    • Establish clear links to student outcome data and curriculum initiatives.
    • Conduct a survey of teachers to determine the methods of assessment they use.
    • Review current assessment to determine what areas are being assessed.
    • Determine areas of strength and areas of greatest need revealed by the assessment results.
    • Utilize procedures for looking at student work to determine assessment methods and calibration.
