    CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION: Monitoring Curriculum Implementation
    Overview: The adoption of curriculum by the school board starts a process of implementation that includes monitoring both the curriculum and the instructional practice with respect to achieving the expected outcomes.

    • How is curriculum and instructional practice monitored to ensure proper implementation?
    • What resources and professional development are needed to successfully implement the curriculum and instruction in our school(s)?
    • What is the superintendent’s role in monitoring curriculum implementation?
    • Are there clear procedures to guide curriculum implementation and follow-up?
    • Are there sufficient resources and supports in place to implement curriculum initiatives successfully?
    • How will the superintendent know whether the curriculum has been implemented successfully?
    • Is there a process to guide instructional decisions?
    • How will the superintendent know if instructional practices are consistently successful?
    • What is the status of curriculum implementation?
    • Who is responsible for monitoring curriculum implementation in the classroom? What is the principal’s role?
    • What professional development dues the staff need in order to implement the curriculum successfully?
    • Does the evaluation system link to curriculum implementation and provide feedback on instructional practices?
    • Are instructional practices aligned with the school’s mission and the desired curriculum outcomes?
    • What systems are in place to provide feedback on the instructional delivery practices? Are they based on student needs and assessment data?

    Tasks to Consider
    • Request periodic updates from superintendent regarding curriculum implementation.
    • Review budget to ensure that adequate resources are available to support instructional practices.
    • Review policies and procedures to determine the role of superintendent.
    • Establish clear procedures to guide curriculum implementation.
    • Review budgets (and other resources) before approving curriculum initiatives.
    • Establish benchmarks and procedures to review and follow up on curriculum initiatives.
    • Review or establish process to monitor effectiveness of instructional practices.
    • Review implementation process, ensuring a system for ongoing review.
    • Work with teacher leaders regarding curriculum implementation and related PD needs.
    • Set curriculum goals as part of teacher evaluation. goal-setting process.
    • Review the school’s/district’s mission to determine implications for instructional practice.
    • Visit classrooms to determine types of instructional strategies being used.
    • Review the teacher evaluation system to identify areas of focus in instruction, expectations for teacher reflection on instruction, and the level of feedback given to teacher in instructional practice.
    • Identify resources that provide current research on instructional practices.
    • Communicate an emphasis on and interest in instruction.
