January is School Board Recognition Month. Please join VSBA in honoring school board members’ commitment to ensuring all children have success in school.


Here are some suggestions successfully used by other districts to make School Board Appreciation Month special for your school board members.


  • Recognize board members at school sporting events.

  • Have student newspapers interview and profile board members.

  • Encourage parent and community organizations and student councils to sponsor an appreciation breakfast for the school board.

  • Use school marquees and message boards to thank board members for their service.

  • Print a copy of the state resolution of School Board Recognition Month in district newsletters

  • Write a personal letter thanking board members to be published in district newsletters, local newspapers, and on the district website. (Click here for a template.)

  • Present certificates of appreciation to board members at your January meeting.

  • Send a press release to local media. (Click here for a template.)

  • Plan a reception at the January board meeting. Invite students, local community members, media, local service groups, etc.

  • Sponsor a student poster or essay contest to thank school board members for their dedication and hard work. Share the results in local banks, post offices, and libraries. Send a photograph of the winner(s) to the local newspaper.

  • Create social media posts to recognize the work of school board members.

  • Create activity passes to all board members allowing them to attend all district activities (sports events, concerts, plays, etc.) at no charge.

  • Arrange to have a board member be a guest lecturer in an appropriate class during the month.

  • Invite board members to meet students and faculty for lunch in the school cafeteria.

  • Arrange for a local florist to donate a single rose for each board member and put it at his or her place at the January board meeting.

  • Announce School Board Recognition Month on all supervisory union websites and social media accounts.

  • Plan structured and organized visitations by board members throughout the district.
