New School Board Member Tool Kit
Welcome to the school board! Here's a collection of resources to help you learn more about the roles and responsibilities of school boards and their members.
Normally the VSBA hosts a live webinar and additional live trainings to welcome new board members. However, this year is a little different due to the Governor's state of emergency guidelines. So we pre-recorded a video and handouts to welcome new board members and provide some general guidance to guide your work on the school board.
This Tool Kit is adapted from our publication, The Essential Work of Vermont School Boards. The documents and templates included in the Tool Kit are a distillation of the key references and tasks for good governance in the six main areas of school board work.
Essential Work of School Boards
The workshop will review the role and responsibilities of a school board member, which include:
Building a shared a vision for education in the community.
Establishing policy parameters.
Hiring and working with a superintendent to lead and manage the district to achieve the vision.
Monitoring progress toward the vision, and assuring accountability for results
Developing and adopting a budget to support the vision.
Engaging the community in supporting the education of students.
Participants will also have an opportunity to meet and network with other new school board members in their region.
For more information on key references and tasks for good governance, The Essential Work of Vermont School Boards Workbook is an excellent resource published by VSBA.
All new board members receive this book as a free gift from the VSBA. If you are a new board member and have not received it please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Supervisory Unions and Supervisory Districts who are VSBA members have a free .pdf file of this book.
